Reeling in the Big One!

Author: admin

Securing or snagging your dream football autograph is such a fantastic feeling. You’ve been hunting the target for days, weeks, months (maybe even longer!) and you finally get the chance. Palms sweaty, heart racing you see your ‘victim’ – and you go for it! There’s pushing and shoving, arms thrust out with pens, photos, footballs and all sorts of paraphernalia being pushed into the players face. Other fans and collectors vie for the best position to get in front of their idol / target / opportunity (you choose)

Finally you get in front of them, close enough to stick that Sharpie and your item to be signed into their hand. They take them – quickly acknowledge your presence (if you’re lucky) and you’ve got it! You back away holding your prized possession tightly in your hands and retreat from the swarm of autograph hunters who haven’t been as lucky yet to relative quiet. You stare down at your new autograph and the smile beams across your face. Gotcha!

It’s such a great feeling, whether it’s your first big autograph or just your latest. The satisfaction of bagging a big’un is superb. It’s such a rush. I spoke to a friend of mine who’s been doing this for years, and is also a very keen fisherman. When I asked why he still collected after all these years he looked me in the eye, smiled and said ‘It’s kinda like that feeling when you go fishing. You know, when you hook that big old bass. You fight with him for a while, but eventually you manage to reel him in. You don’t always get them – some you lose, some get away. But when you do get’em nothing beats that’.

I love his analogy. I’d never likened this business to fishing before, but I guess it ain’t so different after all. Keep your eye on the prize; set your sights high and good luck with reeling in the big one!
